Myth:
Fact:
People with reading problems are lazy. If they would just try a little harder or read a little more, they would become good readers No one wants to have a reading problem! People who struggle with reading are trying hard to do what’s not working. They need help to change the incorrect strategies their brains are using for reading.
People with reading problems aren’t very bright. Reading problems have nothing to do with intelligence. Very bright, articulate people can and do have reading problems.
People have reading problems because they dropped out of school. People may drop out of school because they had reading problems. And no matter what age or grade last attended, it’s never too late to learn to read well.
People aren’t reading well because they don’t know phonics. People aren’t reading well because they don’t understand how to appropriately use their phonics knowledge. It is the misuse of information they already have that causes so many people who know phonics to still have difficulties reading
People with dyslexia, ADD, and other learning disabilities can’t learn to read well or at best, can expect to always struggle with the reading process. Learning disabilities do not need to stop people from becoming wonderful readers. The brain will adjust if a suitable method is made available.
My child does poorly when taking tests.
I think there are comprehension problems.
Written tests can’t give you an accurate assessment of your child’s knowledge of a particular subject, if the questions can’t be read comfortably and efficiently. If the same test were given orally you would have a better understanding of his/her ability to comprehend.
